REVIEW OF PSSA TERMS

antonym a word that is the opposite of another word
synonym a word that is the same as another word
homophone two or more words that are pronounced alike, but different in spelling and meaning
main idea the author's message about the topic; often expressed directly or it can be implied
conclusion The ending of a story
similarity Something that is to be the same as
difference dissimilarity
compare looking for similarities
contrast looking for differences
cause & effect noting a relationship between events such that one is the result of the other
context clues information that appears near a word or phrase and offers direct or indirect suggestions about its meaning
affix a group of letters added to the beginning or ending of a root word
prefix a group of letters added to the beginning of a root word
suffix a group of letters added to the ending of a root word
theme a major idea broad enough to cover the entire scope of a literary work
flashback a device used in a story to present an action that occurred before the beginning of the story
foreshadow a device used in a story to create expectation or explanation of later developments
predict to declare or tell in advance
evaluate to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of
paraphrase a restatement of a text or passage giving the meaning in another form, as for clearness; rewording
