alliteration repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of each or most of the words in a sentence
assonance repetition of a pattern of similar sounds within a sentence
chorus part of a song or poem that is repeated following each verse
consonance repetition of the same consonant or consonant pattern, two or more times in short succession
couplet two lines of poetry that rhyme and are the same length in rhythm
enjambment when a phrase,clause or a sentence in a line of poetry doesnt finish at the line break but spills over into the next line
foot unit of metre consisting of a combination of stressed and unstressed syllables
hypebole a great exaggeration
iambic pantameter describes the particular rhythm that words establish in a line
metaphor there to make an even stronger image in the readers head by describing a place, subject, or object
onomataopeia a word that imitates
oxymoron figure of speech that uses contradictory terms
personification when you make an object or idea do something that a human can do
refrain to use a verse or phrase repeatedly
repetition a word or phrase that is placed more than once in a poem
rhyme two words sound the same when spoken
rhythm a pattern of stresses within a line or verse
simile a figure of speech that compares two things in a sentence
stanza a set amount of lines that can be grouped by a rhythmic pattern
syllable a single unit of a word
