Describe the geography of the Florida Everglades. Has marshes and swamps (wetlands), it covers more than 1 million acres.
What is a piedmont? An area of high land at the foot of a mountain.
What kind of climate does the Southeast region have? Mild, warm, sunny, also rainy.
What are fertilizers? Material added to soil to make it more fertile.
In the 1500s, which Native American tribe lived in the Appalachian Mountains? Cherokee
How did Americans in the Southeast use natural resources? Rivers and lakes used for food, water, and transportation. Wood from trees for homes, canoes, and tools. Soil for growing crops.
What is a wet land? An area of lowland partly covered with slow moving or still water.
Jamestown was established in the seventeenth century. What year was it founded? 1607
What was the Wilderness Road? What year was it open? Why was it important? It was the path through the Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains. It was open in 1775. It was important because settlers could cross the Appalachian Mountains.
Who helped clear a path through the Cumberland Gap? Daniel Boone
What were most plantations in the Southeast used for? To grow cash crops like cotton.
In 1820, what compromise kept the balance between free states and slave states? Missouri Compromise.
What was the purpose of the Missouri Compromise? To even out free and slave states and allowed slavery in new states formed in the south and did not allow slavery in new northern states.
Who planned and negotiated the Missouri Compromise? Henry Clay
Who was elected president in 1860? What did he say about slavery? Abraham Lincoln. He said that slavery should not be allowed in any new states that join the Union.
On April 12, 1861, what war began? Civil War
What two sides were fighting in this war? North (Union) vs. South (Confederacy
Who was the leader of the Confederate army that surrendered to the Union? Robert E Lee
Who was the leader of the Union army? Ulysses S. Grant
Who developed the Cherokee writing system? Sequoyah
Who was an important leader in the Civil Rights movement? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Which city grew around a port along the Gulf coast? New Orleans
What are raw materials? Name two examples. Natural resources used to make products. ex. minerals, crops.
What is international trade? Trade among different countries.
What is import? A product brought into a country from a different country to be sold.
What is export? Products shipped from one country to another country to be sold.
Describe shipping in the past. Workers unload products and carried it all to a truck. It was expensive.
Describe shipping today. Products shipped in containers, cranes lift containers. It is less expensive.
What is segregation? Setting one group apart
What is prejudice? Hatred or unfair treatment of a particular group.
What is intimidation? The use of threats to force someone to do something.
What is humiliation? A feeling of shame or foolishness
What is hostility? Unfriendliness, or hatred.
