Weather Tools/Clouds/Water cycle
Term | Definition |

barometer | A tool used to measure the amount of air pressure |
meteorologist | A person who studies weather and uses tools to make weather forecasts or predictions. |
thermometer | A tool used to measure temperature. |
rain gauge | A tool used to measure the amount of precipitation. (rainfall) |
anemometer | A tool used to measure the speed of the wind. |
wind vane | A tool that shows the direction the wind is blowing. |
weather balloon | A tool that is used to measure weather conditions high up in the atmosphere. |
cirrus clouds | Feathery and fibrous clouds that are very high in the sky and made of ice crystals. They represent fair weather, but often indicate rain or snow will fall within several hours. |
cumulus clouds | Fluffy and white clouds with flat bottoms. Usually mean fair weather, however when they get together can produce thunderstorms. |
stratus clouds | Smooth, gray clouds that cover the whole sky.Light rain and snow are associated with these clouds. |
fog | A stratus cloud that is close the ground. |
evaporation | The part of the water cycle when water is a vapor (gas). |
condensation | The part of the water cycle when clouds are formed and moisture gathers together. |
precipitation | The part of the water cycle when moisture falls to the ground as rain, sleet, snow or hail. |
rain | This type of precipitation is in liquid form starting in the cloud, going through the air and landing on the ground as a liquid. |
snow | This typr of precipitation is in solid form starting in the cloud, going through the air and lands on the ground as a solid. |
hail | This type of precipitation falls as a solid and gets uplifted back into the cloud, falls, and gets lifted back up in the cloud. This can happen many times before it is heavy enough to fall to the ground. |
sleet | This tpe of precipitation falls as a liquid, but travels through very cold air and freezez. It will coat things with a layer of ice. |
drizzle | A light rain. |
flurry | A light snow |
atmosphere | The layer of gases that cover the Earth like a blanket. |
troposphere | The layer of the atmosphere that contains the weather. |
