CRUST Outermost surface of Earth
OCEANIC CRUST The floor beneath the oceans; Thinner than continental crust
CONTINENTAL CRUST Much thicker than oceanic crust in land areas
LAYERS OF THE EARTH **Crust **Mantle **Outer Core **Inner Core
MANTLE Made up of hot, dense rock; Located between the crust & the core; Almost 3,000 km thick; Temperature and pressure rises as you go deeper
LITHOSPHERE Crust and top (upper) layer of the mantle; Divided into shifting tectonic plates
ASTHENOSPHERE Plastic-like layer of the Earth's mantle; Upon which the plates move
CONVECTION CURRENTS Circular current movements in the Earth's mantle RISES as it heats up; Provides energy for plate tectonics
CORE The CENTER of the Earth; Made mainly of iron and nickel; Located BELOW the mantle
OUTER CORE Molten (liquid) nickel and iron; Located between the mantle and the inner core
INNER CORE Solid, made up mainly of iron; Located in the center of the Earth
EARTH'S MAGNETC FIELD A gigantic magnetic field surrounding the Earth; Protecting the planet and all life from space radiation
