Environment

The air, water, minerals and other surrounding external factors

TermDefinition
ENVIRONMENT Refers to the surroundings of an organism
CONSERVATION Wise use of resources. Preserves and reduces damage to natural resources.
RENEWABLE Resources Resources that can be replaced within the human lifetime. i.e., Timber, water, and solar energy
NONRENEWABLE Resources Resources replaced after long periods of time AND under certain conditions (i.e., Coal, oil and natural gas)
AIR POLLUTION Harmful atmosphere caused by (burning of materials) fossil fuels from vehicle exhausts and from industrial (factories) emissions.
ACID RAIN Compounds washed out of air as it rains. Due to both NATURAL resources (volcanoes, decaying vegetation) and MAN-MADE resources (factories, car exhausts) Gases react in atmosphere with water, oxygen, & other chemicals to form various acidic compounds
PESTICIDES Poisonous chemicals....which can poison water, soil and the food we eat.
HABITAT DESTRUCTION Cutting down of forests for lumber, farming, mining, & construction. Removes habitats (place where animals live) essential for the reproduction or sustenance (food) for certain species
GLOBAL WARMING Acts as a blanket and holds heat in causing rising temperatures. Burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) increases amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
OZONE LAYER Absorbs 97-99% of the sun's ultraviolet light—Potentially damaging to life on earth. Located in the stratosphere. Being destroyed by chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's). (i.e., coolants in refrigerators & air conditioners)
ULTRAVIOLET (UV) LIGHT Light with a wavelength shorter than visible light, but longer than x-rays. More energetic than visible light and has a shorter wavelength, letting it penetrate more readily through obstacles (i.e., tanning booths, black lights)
