METEOROLOGY: Weather

Fifth Grade!

TermDefinition
Wind Speed is the speed of wind, the movement of air or other gases in an atmosphere
Wind Direction the direction from which the wind is blowing, measured using a wind vane
Precipitation any form of water, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail, that falls to the earth's surface and the quantity of the amount
Temperature measure of the warmness or coolness of an object, measured using a thermometer
Air Pressure the pressure exerted by the atmosphere, measured using a barometer
Climate the average condition of atmosphere over a long period of time
Weather state of the atmosphere at a given time and place
Atmosphere the layer of gases that surround the Earth and are locked in, or trapped, by the Earth's gravitational pull
Stratus Clouds clouds that form in blanket-like layers at low altitudes
Cirrus Clouds clouds that form at very high altitudes out of ice crystals and have a wispy, featherlike shape.
Cumulus Clouds puffy clouds that appear to rise up from a flat bottom.
Nimbus Clouds A cloud that already had a form of precipitation falling from it
Meteorology the study of the atmosphere and weather
Forecast prediction of the upcoming weather conditions for a given area at a given time
High Pressure System a pattern surrounding a high pressure center from which winds blow outward
Low Pressure System a pattern surrounding a low pressure center in which winds blow in toward the center
Warm Front Forms when a moist, warm air mass slides up and over a cold air mass, causing gentle precipitation and warm, mild weather.
Cold Front Forms when a cold air mass pushes under a warm air mass, forcing the warm air to rise, causing thunderstorms and cool, fair weather afterwards.
Forms when warm and cold air meet and neither air mass has the force to move the other. They remain stationary, or “standing still.” This front causes many days of rainy/cloudy weather and/or fog. Stationary Front
Forms when a warm air mass gets caught between two cold air masses. The warm air mass rises as the cool air masses push and meet in the middle, causing cold temperatures, strong winds, and heavy precipitation. Occluded Front
a tool for measuring the air pressure of an area Barometer
measures temperature of an area in the units of Celsius of Farhenheit Thermometer
a tool used to measure wind speed in the units of ft/min, m/s, MPH, km/h and knots to accommodate a wide variety of uses. Anemometer
Wind Vane a tool used to find the wind direction, directions include N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, SW (rooster)
Rain Gauge a tool used to measure the amount of precipitation over a specific period of time in liters
Hygrometer a tool for measuring the humidity of an area
amount of water vapor in the air Humidity
A very strong low pressure storm system with violent wind. These storms usually start over the Atlantic Ocean in the tropics. Hurricane
Evaporation the process in which a liquid turns in to a gas, water becomes water vapor. (gaining energy)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
