Mixtures & Solutions
vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
matter | anything that has mass and takes up space (has volume) |
solid | matter that has a definite shape and volume with particles that are close together and stay in the same place |
liquid | matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape, has particles that are close together but move apart from each other |
gas | matter that does not have a definite shape or volume with particles that easily move far apart from each other and spread out |
mixture | composed of two or more substances that are mixed together but can be separated from each other |
solution | a type of mixture composed of substances that mix so completely that they cannot be distinguished as separate substances (look like one substance) |
suspension | a type of mixture where the parts are mixed and then settle so you can see the different parts |
colloid | a type of mixture where the parts do not settle and can sometimes look cloudy |
filtration | a method used to separate solid particles from a liquid |
sifting | a method used to separate smaller solid particles from larger solid particles |
magnetic attraction | a method used to separate magnetic material from a mixture of other substances |
evaporation | a method used to separate a solid that is dissolved in a liquid solution |
chromatography | a method used to separate and analyze the solutes in a solution |
floatation | a method used to separate solids that float from the remaining liquid in a mixture |
solvent | the substance in a solution that is in the greatest amount (the largest part of the solution), it is usually the liquid |
solute | the substance in a solution that is in the least amount (the smallest part of the solution), it is usually the solid |
concentration | the relationship of the amount of solute to solvent in a solution |
rate of dissolving | how quickly the solute dissolves in the solvent of a solution, can be affected by temperature change, particle size, or stirring |
physical change | change in state of matter, can be changed back to original form |
chemical change | when substances chemically combine and form a new substance that cannot be easily separated or changed back to its original form |
