Language common terms

TermDefinition
noun a naming word.
verb an action or 'doing' word.
adjective a word that describes a noun.
pronoun a word that takes the place of a noun.
adverb a word that describes a verb. It helps to show how an action happens.
preposition a word that shows the position of something.
conjunction a word that joins two parts of a sentence together.
collective noun a word that describes a group of things.
apostrophes used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters from a word
contractions Shortening of words in informal speech and writing.
full stop ends a sentence.
colon used before a list or explanation.
semicolon use between the parts of a compound sentence if they aren't joined by and
speech marks used around any spoken words.
capital letter used at the beginning of a sentence and the first letter of a name.
simple sentence a single independent clause.
compound sentence a sentence with two or more independent clauses.
complex sentence a sentence that includes one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
personification a figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object.
metaphor when one thing is said to be something that it is not.
simile compares two things using like or as.
onomatopoeia a word that imitates the sound it represents.
