Atmosphere

Unit 7

TermDefinition
Troposphere Layer of the atmosphere containing clouds and weather; this is the layer in which we live
Stratosphere Layer of the atmosphere containing the ozone layer
Mesosphere Layer of the atmosphere that is the coldest
Thermosphere The highest layer of the atmosphere (high temperature, but no heat)
Radiation Energy received from the sun as electromagnetic waves
Conduction Transfer of heat through a material (by touch)
Convection Transfer of heat by circulation
Greenhouse Effect The process by which gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, absorb thermal energy and radiate it back to Earth
Global Warming A gradual increase in average global temperature (also known as climate change)
Wind Movement of air caused be differences in air pressure
Global Wind Prevailing wind patterns that blow in a fairly constant, steady direction across the Earth (i.e. westerlies, trade winds, easterlies)
Local Wind Winds that generally move short distances and can blow from any direction
Land breeze At night, the land cools faster than water, so the wind blows toward the ocean
Sea breeze During the day, the land heats up faster than the water, so the air above the land becomes warmer than the air above the ocean. The warm land air rises, and the cold ocean air flows in to replace it.
Mountain and valley breezes Like land and sea breezes, these local winds are created by differences in temperature and elevation
