Grasslands Ecosystem in which there is too much water to form a desert, but enough water to support a forest
Desert-Grassland Boundary Area between a desert and a grassland where increased rainfall enable some grasses to grow
Prairie Grassland area characterized by rolling hills, plains, and sod-forming grasses
Steppe Grassland area that gets less than 50 cm of rain per year, characterized by short bunchgrasses
Sod-Forming Grasses Grass that forms a mat of soil and roots
Humus Layer of organic matter formed from decaying plant matter
Bunchgrasses Short, fine-bladed grass that grows in clumps
Savanna Tropical grassland ranging from dry to scrubland to wet, open woodland
Runner Long, horizontal stem of many plants that runs below the ground, making the plant resistant to drought, fire, and grazing animals
Tuft Large clump of tall, coarse grass
Vertical Feeding Pattern Pattern in which different species eat vegetation at different heights
