cloud formation | Through evaporation & transpiration, water moves into the atmosphere. Then water vapor condenses around dust particles to create clouds. Eventually water returns to earth in the form of rain, snow, sleet and hail. |
heat index | A number that expresses the warming effect of humidity at different temperatures.The "feel like" temperature on a hot day. The calculation uses only air temperature & relative humidity., |
wind chill factor | A number that expresses the cooling effect of moving air at different temperatures. The calculation uses only air temperature & wind speed. Windchill temp of 30 and below = frostbite in a short period of time. |
lake effect snow | Snow that forms on the downwind side of large lakes. Common in late Fall & Winter in the Great Lakes region when cold, dry air picks up moisture from the unfrozen lake surfaces. |
doppler radar | Radar tracking system using the Doppler effect to determine the location and velocity of a storm, clouds, precipitation, etc. |
