The Energy of Waves
Question | Answer |
---|---|
medium | a substance through which a wave can travel |
transverse wave | a wave in which the particles of the wave's medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling, light waves, electromagnetic wave |
longitudinal wave | a wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the path that the wave travels, sound waves, mechanical waves |
amplitude | the maximum distance a wave vibrates from its rest position |
wavelength | the distance between one point on a wave and the corresponding point on an adjacent wave |
frequency | the number of waves produced in a given amount of time |
wave | a disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space |
wave speed | the speed at which a wave travels, speed = wavelength times frequency, m/s |
reflection | the bouncing back of a wave after it strikes a barrier or an object |
refraction | the bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another |
diffraction | the bending of waves around a barrier or through an opening, depends on wavelength and size of barrier or opening the wave encounters |
constructive interference | interference that results in a wave that has a greater amplitude than that of the individual waves, crest meets with a crest |
destructive interference | interference that results in a wave that has a smaller amplitude than that of the individual waves, crest meets with a trough |
standing wave | a wave that forms a stationary pattern in which portions of the wave do not move an other portions move with large amplitudes, |
resonance | occurs when an object vibrating at or near resonant frequency of a second object causes the second object to vibrate |
hertz | unit used to express frequencey, one hertz is one wave per second, Hz |
echo | a reflected sound wave |
resonant frequency | the frequencies at which standing waves are made |
mechanical wave | wave that requires a medium in order to transmit energy, sound is an example |
electromagnetic waves | waves that do not require a medium in order to transmit energy, light is an example |
perpendicular | at right angles |
compression | section of a longitudinal wave where the particles are crowded together |
rarefaction | section of a longitudinal wave where the particles are less croweded together or spread apart |
crest | highest point of a transverse wave |
trough | lowest point of a transverse wave |
