Chemistry Unit 1 vocabulary.

TermDefinition
Density The amount of matter in a given volume.
Mixture Two or more substances that are physically separable.
Filter Separation based on size.
Distillation Separation based on boiling point.
Observations Find problems.
Hypothesis Educated guess about the solution/cause of the problem.
Experiment Test your hypothesis.
Independent variable Scientist changes the variable.
Dependent variable Varies based on IV.
Conclusion Did hypothesis solve the problem?
Theory Supported by many conclusions.
Law Undisputed with no need of proof.
Accuracy How close you come to a specific value.
Precision Getting the same value over and over.
Matter Anything with mass and volume.
Element Matter made of 1 type of atom.
Atom Most basic unit of matter that still has the properties of the base elements.
Compound Matter made of 2 or more elements. No longer has the properties of the base elements.
Molecule Compound with a covalent bond.
Formula unit Compound with an ionic bond.
Homogeneous The same throughout.
Heterogeneous Forms layers, separates over time.
Suspension Mixture that separates over time.
Colloid Mixture that never settles.
Solid Definite shape, mass, and volume. Atoms vibrate and are very close together.
Liquid Indefinite shape. Definite mass and volume. Atoms roll or flow.
Gas Indefinite shape and volume. Definite mass.
Plasma Charged particles. Blood and star wars.
