Question | Answer |
---|---|
Commutative Property of Addition | You can add terms in any order EX: 5+4=4+5 |
Commutative Property of Multiplication | You can multiply terms in any order EX: 5*4=4*5 |
Associative Property of Addition | Changing grouping symbols does NOT change sum EX: (5+2)+3=5+(2+3) |
Associative Property of Multiplication | Changing grouping symbols does NOT change product EX: (5*3)*2=5*(3*2) |
Additive Inverse | opposite |
Additive Inverse Property (aka Inverse Property of Addition) | The sum of any number and its additive inverse (opposite) is zero EX: 5+(-5)=0 |
Multiplicative Inverse | reciprocal |
Multiplicative Inverse Property (aka Inverse Property of Multiplication) | The product of any number and its multiplicative inverse (reciprocal) is one EX: 5*(1/5)=1 |
Additive Identity | 0 |
Additive Identity Property (aka Identity Property of Addition) | The sum of any number and the additive identity (0) is the number EX: 5+0=5 |
Multiplicative Identity | 1 |
Multiplicative Identity Property (aka Identity Property of Multiplication) | The product of any number and the multiplicative identity (1) is the number EX: 5*1=5 |
Distributive Property | a(b+c)=ab+ac or a(b-c)=ab-ac |
