Populations

QuestionAnswer
Carrying Capacity? The number of individuals an environment can support.
Population size? The number of individual living things of a specific type within a given area.
Ecology? The study of how living things interact with each other and with their physical environments.
Ecosystem? All the living things that exist together in a habitat.
Variation? Inherited differences within a species or specific type of organism.
Mutation? Usually harmful.
Water cycle? Circulation of water throughout the environment.
Biogeochemical Cycle? Movement of atoms of specific elements throughout the environment.
Logistical Curve? "S" curve - based on reproduction rates influenced by environmental factors.
Exponential Curve? "J" curve - based on reproduction rates only.
What happens when more offspring are produced than the environment can support? Competition for resources until Carrying Capacity is reached.
Predator? A living thing that feeds on another living thing.
Exotic Specie? A living thing that is introduced into a new environment where it has never lived before.
