Topic 2:Measuring. A

Measuring Earth, pgs. (18-20)

QuestionAnswer
Define the term, model: A representation of reality to an appropriate scale.
Describe a model of the Earth. Round and smooth like a ping pong ball.
List the three external structures of the Earth from least to most dense. Atmosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.
What page in the ESRT can you find information about Earth's atmosphere? Page 14, top, Selected Properties of Earth's Atmosphere.
Can you name the four layers of our atmosphere from lowest to highest altitude? Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and Thermosphere.
Explain what the "Pauses" are, and how many we find in the Table. The "Pauses" are interfaces. There are three (3) of them.
Define an interface: A boundary, real or imaginary, across which energy flows.
If I needed to know about the composition of Earth's exterior structures, where would I need to look? Page 1, ESRT, bottom. Chemical Composition of Earth's Crust, Hydrosphere & Atmosphere.
Name the two most abundant elements found in Earth's Crust. Oxygen (47%) and Silicon (28%).
Name the two most abundant elements found in Earths Atmosphere. Nitrogen (78%) and Oxygen (21%).
Name the two most abundant elements found in the Hydrosphere. Hydrogen (66%) and Oxygen (33%). (*H2O)
What percentage of Earth's surface is covered by water? 72%. It fluctuates depending upon the Season.
State the average depth of our oceans. 3.8 Kilometers; or about two (2) miles.
State the Earth's diameter, and radius. 12,735 Km = diameter; 6,378 Km = radius
Describe the physical phase state of each external structure. Solid, lithosphere. Liquid, hydrosphere. Gas, atmosphere.
Name the proper geometric shape of the Earth. Oblate spheroid.
Where would one weigh less, at the Poles or the Equator? Equator due to the bulge of the Earth resulting in greater distance from Earth's center, thus less weight. One weighs more at the Poles as Earth is slightly flattened there and so one is closer to center, thus weighing slightly more.
Explain how a sailing ships mast might have provided a clue, evidence that Earth's surface is curved. The top of mast is first and final point of the ship observed as the ship approaches, or recedes.
Where in the ESRT would one look to learn details about Earth's interior structures? Page 10, ESRT.
As depth increases from the surface towards the core of the Earth, what trend can we observe in terms of density, pressure, and temperature? All variables increase. (*See ESRT pg.10.)
Define an Aerosol: (after all, you are breathing them now) Minute solids or liquids suspended in Earth's atmosphere. Volcanic eruptions eject tons of aerosols into Earth's atmosphere.
