Topic 4:Motions. C

Motions of Earth, Moon & Sun, pgs. (71- 74)

QuestionAnswer
How much of the Moon is illuminated at all times by the Sun under normal circumstances? 50%
How much time must pass for the moon to complete one lunar cycle, say from full moon to full moon? 29.5 Days
Can you compare apogee and perigee? "A away, P is next to me." Apogee is when the moon is furthest from Earth and smallest in the sky. Perigee is when the moon is closest to the Earth and largest in the sky.
When is the phase of the moon new? (*no moon) When the moon is between the Sun and Earth, straight line.
When is the phase of the moon full Moon? When the moon is outside of the Sun - Earth system, straight line.
How can you recognize first quarter moon? White to the right, first quarter.
How can we recognize last quarter moon (3rd Qtr.) Light left, last quarter.
Can you describe a "spring tide"? New and full moon phase. "High" high tide, and "Low" low tide. Max gravitational force due to linear configuration of the 3 celestial objects.
Can you describe a "neap tide"? First and last quarter moon. "Low" high tide and "High" low tide. Minimum gravitational force due to 90 degree configuration of the 3 celestial objects.
Are you able to draw a solar eclipse? Sun - Moon - Earth Sun blocked by moon for observer on Earth.
Can you depict a lunar eclipse? Sun - Earth - Moon Moon blocked by Earth's shadow for an observer on Earth.
Can you compare the "Umbra" and the "Pen-umbra" of a celestial shadow? The umbra is dark shadow, the pen-umbra is the light - outside portion of the shadow.
If the Moon continues to move away from the Earth, what will happen to the appearance of the Solar Eclipse? Less and less of the Sun will be covered as the moon appears smaller and smaller as it recedes from the surface of the Earth. (*Apparent Diameter)
Are tides cyclic or non cyclic? How long for one high to high (or low to low) tide cycle? Yes, cyclic which suggests predictable and repetitive. Time duration is 12 hours, 26 minutes for on complete tidal cycle.
Why are there impact craters found on the Moon's surface? The Moon has no atmosphere, thus no wind or erosion by running water. So all scars on the Moon's surface remain without blemish over time.
