Topic 4:Motions. B
Motions of Earth, Moon & Sun, pgs. (63 - 68)
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Describe the Geocentric Model. | Earth Centered. Earth motionless. All celestial objects orbit Earth in perfect circular paths. Model is WRONG! |
Explain the Heliocentric Model. | Sun Centered. Earth rotates and revolves about the Sun. Orbital paths are elliptical. Model is Correct! |
How might we know if a model is accurate or not? | If model can make future predictions accurately, it is very good. |
Earth's axis is tilted how many degrees from a line perpendicular to the plane of its orbit of the Sun? | 23.5 degrees. |
What evidence exists to support that Earth rotates? | Photographs from satellites or astronauts. |
How can the Foucault Pendulum support that Earth rotates? | In 12 hours, the pendulum swings along only one line, yet knocks down all pins in a 360 degree circle. Earth rotates below the pendulum and carries the pins into the path of the swinging pendulum. |
Describe the Coriolis Effect. | The apparent deflection of atmospheric wind and ocean currents towards the west if one is at the Equator and the thing is approaching from the poles. |
About how many degrees will the Earth travel in its orbital path each day? | About 1 degree. One (1) times 365 days is just a bit more than 360 degrees! |
Name the frame of reference for a day, a month, and a year. | Day is one Earth rotation. Month is one lunar cycle. Year is one Earth revolution about the Sun. |
Local time is determined by longitude. How many degrees of longitude equal one hour? | 15 degrees of longitude = one hour ; as 24 hours X 15 degrees = 360 degrees or one day. |
If you travel west from a known time and lonigude, is it earlier or later? | Earlier, such as calling California from New York. 3 Hrs earlier in Cali, so it is about 45 degrees of longitude away, West. |
Calling Germany from New York, it is about six (6) hour ahead of us. How many degrees of longitude is central Europe away from us? | 6 hrs. X 15 degrees/hr = 75 degrees of longitude, East is later! |
Are meridians lines of latitude or longitude? | Longitude such as the Prime Meridian. |
Can you name Earth's only natural satellite? | The Moon. |
What is true of the periods of rotation and revolution of the Moon? | The two are equal at 27.3 days. Thus, observers on Earth only see one side of the Moon at all times. |
