Describe an apparent motion. | The motion, real or illusory, that an object appears to make. |
Can you list the four apparent daily motions of Stars, including our Sun? | 1) East to West 2) 15 degrees per hour 3) circular 4) uniform motion |
What is Polaris? | The North Star; found as the first star in the handle of the little dipper. Use the "pointer stars" in the cup of the big dipper to site in on Polaris. |
Explain circumpolar stars. | Stars close to Polaris that an observer at the North Pole on Dec. 21st would see the 360 degree apparent motion of the star about Polaris in 24 hrs. |
Define an arc: | Part of a circle. As a star is further away from the North Star, Polaris, an observer would see fewer and fewer degrees of the arc of the 360 degree nightly path. The path would appear ever flatter, less circular. |
Describe the apparent motion of a planet in our solar system. | Planets appear to wander in an S shape due to changes in velocity and variance in circumference of the orbital paths. (*See fig. 4-2) |
Why does the sun appear to change position over the course of the year regarding location of sunrise, sunset, and duration of time above the horizon? | 23.5 degree tilt of Earth in space; and revolution of Earth about the sun. |
How far North and South of the Equator will the Sun appear to travel over the course of the year? | Tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees North, to Tropic of Capricorn, 23.5 degrees South. |
How many times will the Sun appear to cross the equator each year? | Twice. Equal, Equator, Equinox. On March 21st and September 22nd. (*see fig. 4-4) |
What date is the altitude of the Sun highest/lowest for an observer in NYS? | Highest June 21st, lowest on December 21st. (*72 degrees in June, 25 degrees in December.) |
Over which latitude is the Sun found at Zenith at solar noon on June 21, December 21, March 21, and Sept. 22nd? | Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, and the Equator on the Equinox. |
How many hours of day light does the world experience on an Equinox? | 12 hours day, 12 hours of night all over the world. |
How many hours of daylight at the North Pole on June 21, and Dec. 21? | June = 24 hours of sunlight. Dec. = 0 hours of daylight. |
Is the South Pole tilted towards or away from the Sun on Dec. 21st? | Towards as it is Summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The North Pole is tilted away as it is our winter. |
Where will the Sun appear to rise and set on June 21st? | Rise north of due East and set north of due West. |
Where will the Sun appear to rise and set on Sept. 22 and March 21st? | Rise due East and set due West. |
Where will the Sun appear to rise and set on Dec. 21st? | Rise south of due East and set south of due West. |
What direction does the Earth and Moon both rotate and revolve? | Counter clockwise. |
Which direction must an observer in NYS always look to see the sun at solar noon? | South. |
Why do stars appear to move East to West for an observer on Earth? | Because the Earth rotates West to East. |
