How they form

Mineral A solid inorganic substance of natural occurrence.
crystal structure Where crystallization is arranged to form a material.
Moh's Hardness scale A scale used to measure the relative hardness of a mineral by its scratching.
Luster Part of a sleet reflection off a minerals light.
hardness relative resistance of a mineral to its scratching.
clevage A mineral that splits easily along flat surfaces.
Fracture how a mineral looks when it breaks apart in an irregular way.
Streak The color of its powder.
crystallization The process by which atoms are arranged to form a material with a crystal structure.
solution a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another.
vein A narrow channel or slab of a mineral.
geode a rounded,hollow rock.that is often lined with mineral crystals.
element a substances composed of a single atom.
compound dissolves in hot water to form sollutions.
Texture Depends on the size of and shape of its mineral crystals.
fine grained rapid cooling of lava in which tiny crystals form.
coarse grained slow cooling of magma far beneath earth's surface.
porphyry rock A rock with large crystals.
intrusive rock Igneous rock formed from magma below earth's surface.
extrusive rock Igneous rock formed from lava that erupted onto Earth's surface.
compaction the process that presses sediments together.
erosion Occurs when running water,wind,or ice loosen and carry away fragments of rock.
cementation The process in which dissolved minerals crystallize & glue particles of sediment together.
deposition the process by which sediment settles out of water.
clastic rock sedimentary rock that forms when rock fragments are squeezed together.
chemical rock sedimentary rock that forms when minerals dissolved in solution crystallize.
Organic rock Sedimentary rocks formed from remains of animal or animals.
sediment a small,solid piece of material they come from rocks or living things.
Foliated Metamorphic rocks with grains arranged in parallel layers or bands.
Non-foliated Metamorphic rocks with grains arranged randomly.
