Final Exam Review

LMS Ch 22, 23 Review

QuestionAnswer
The two most abundant compounds in air are the gases carbon dioxide and?? Water Vapor.
What holds the gases of the atmosphere near Earth's surface?? Gravity.
The pressure exerted on a surface by the atmosphere is called?? Atmospheric Pressure.
Because the pull of gravity is not as strong at higher altitudes, the air molecules there are farther apart and exert?? Less Pressure.
One effect of air pollution is destruction of?? The Ozone Layer.
As they become heated, molecules in a substance?? Move faster.
What phase does ice change into when it absorbs energy?? Liquid.
When liquid water absorbs energy, it changes to?? A gas.
The name for heat energy that is absorbed or released during a phase change is?? Latent Heat.
The name for the process in which water vapor changes back into a liquid is?? Condensation.
Through what process does most water enter the atmosphere?? Evaporation.
What must happen in order for a cloud droplet to fall as precipitation?? It must increse in size.
The process in which freezing or condensation nuclei are introduced into a cloud to cause rain is called?? Cloud Seeding.
Atmosphere?? A mixture of gases, primarily nitrogen, oxygen, and argon, that surrounds Earth.
Troposphere?? The lowest layer of the atmosphere, in which temperature drops at a constant rate as altitude increases. (Only that one.)
Stratosphere?? The layer of the atmosphere in which temperature increases as altitude increases. (Only that one.)
Mesosphere?? The coldest layer of the atmosphere in which temperature decreases as altitude increases.
Thermosphere?? The uppermost layer of the atmosphere. (Only that one.)
Stratus Clouds?? Clouds with a flat base forming at very low altitudes.
Cumulus Clouds?? Billowy, low-altitude clouds.
Cirrus Clouds?? Feathery clouds composed of ice crystals.
Humidity?? Water Vapor in the atmosphere.
Dew Point?? The temperature at which condensation equals evaporation.
Absolute Humidity?? The mass of water vapor contained in a given volume of air.
Relative Humidity?? The ratio of water vapor in a unit of air relative to the amount of water the air can hold at that temperature.
Rain?? Liquid Precipitation.
Drizzle?? Rain consisting of drops smaller than 0.5 mm in diameter.
Snow?? Precipitation consisting of ice particles.
Hail?? Solid Precipitation in the form of lumps of ice.
It says what does each letter represent and please label the following diagram with these choices. So here I go! Cloud?? E.
Condensation Level?? D.
Cold moist air?? A.
Warm Air?? C.
Solar Energy?? B.
