Weather Map Terms

TermDefinition
weather the day-to-day state of the atmosphere in a certain place
atmospheric movement global air circulation; held to Earth by gravity; influenced by convection
air pressure the force exerted by the atmosphere on Earth’s surface
barometer an instrument that measures the amount of atmospheric pressure
humidity amount of water vapor (or moisture) in air
air masses large bodies of air that have specific characteristics of pressure, temperature, and humidity
high pressure air mass an air mass with greater atmospheric pressure than the surrounding air masses
low pressure air mass an air mass with less atmospheric pressure than the surrounding air masses
warm front the boundary when a warm, moist air mass overtakes a cool, dense, and dryer air mass (red semicircles on map)
cold front the boundary when a cold, dryer air mass overtakes a warmer, humid air mass (blue points on map)
weather map shows the weather conditions at a specific time over a specific region
climate weather averaged over a long period of time, like 100 years or more
anemometer scientific tool used to measure wind speed
stationary front the boundary between a cold and warm air mass, but neither one is displacing the other (alternating red and blue on the map)
occluded front the boundary where a cold front caught up to and pushed under a warm front (purple on map)
wind movement of air from higher pressure and density to lower pressure and density
high pressure the type of pressure that means clear skies
low pressure the type of pressure that means clouds are likely
hygrometer an instrument that measures the amount of humidity
thermal energy a form of energy that is the total kinetic energy (motion) of atoms and molecules in matter.
convection transfer of thermal energy through circular motion caused by heating and cooling in fluids
solar radiation electromagnetic energy emitted from the Sun; travels through space in waves (rays)
fluid any substance that can flow
conduction transfer of thermal energy that requires contact between the atoms or molecules

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
