Introduction to Waves
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Wave | A repeating disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space |
Crest | Highest point of a wave |
Refraction | Bending of a wave as it moves from one medium to another |
Medium | A material through which a wave transfers energy |
Trough | Lowest point of a wave |
Diffraction | Bending of a wave as it passes around a barrier |
Transverse | Matter moves around at right angles to the direction the wave travels |
Rarefaction | Spread apart portion of a compressional wave |
Interference | When two or more waves overlap and combine to form a new wave |
Longitudinal | Matter that moves in the same direction as wave travels |
Wavelength | Distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it |
Standing Wave | When waves continuously interfere with each other |
Frequency | How many wavelengths pass a fixed point each second |
Resonance | Ability of an object to vibrate by absorbing energy at its natural frequency |
Amplitude | Measure of the energy in a wave |
