Topic 6:Insolation.A

Solar Radiation & Insolation, pgs (100-104)

QuestionAnswer
Which Earth cycles does the Sun's energy drive? Water Cycle, Winds, Ocean Currents, Plant life processes.
Define Intensity: The rate at which energy is radiated.
Sun's maximum intensity of radiation occurs in which range? Visible light range.
Define Insolation: Incoming solar radiation.
Describe wavelength. The distance between two successive electromagnetic wave peaks.
Which kind of EM radiation makes it to Earth's surface in greatest intensity? Visible light.
What molecule in the atmosphere absorbs ultraviolet radiation? Ozone. (O3)
List three absorbers of infrared radiation known as Greenhouse Gasses. Carbon Dioxide, Vapor, and Methane.
Explain how clouds interact with energy from above and below. Above, reflect back into space. Below, absorb infrared radiation.
Define aerosols: Finely dispersed solids and liquids suspended in the air.
How does energy primarily interact with aerosols? Scattering and reflection, which results in cooling of Earth's surface.
Name the kind of EM energy that is reradiated by Earth's surface post absorption. Infrared Radiation.
Name 2 factors affecting absorption and reflection of insolation. Angle of Insolation, and Surface Characteristics.
Complete the phrase, "high angle hot, low angle ________." "Not". High angle of insolation means more concentrated sunlight.
Why are the Poles always cold relative to the Equator? Snow and ice is light in color and smooth thus reflecting energy.
Define Transpiration: Plants release of vapor into atmosphere as part of photosynthesis.
How is solar energy stored during the evaporation process of ocean water at or near the Equator? Vaporization stores energy as Potential Energy. (2260 Joules per gram)
Which heats faster and cools faster, land or water? Land due to lower Specific Heat, less reflection, and all energy used to heat rock rather than vaporize H2O.
Describe Global Warming. Reradiated infrared radiation is absorbed in greater amounts by increased amounts of CO2 due to man's burning of fossil fuels. This heats the atmosphere as less infrared escapes to outer space.
What undesirable changes might be brought about by Global Warming? Rising sea level, and more frequent and more powerful hurricanes and tornadoes.
What are the correct answers to questions 1-10, pages 104 & 105? Please complete these multiple choice questions and remit answers.
