Purgatives & Expellants, Drains Damp, Drains Wind Damp

QuestionAnswer
Drains heat & purges buildup.Drains fire & resolves heat toxicity. Most versatile purgative. Primarily used to clear excess from the St and Intestines (jaundice, constip, hot dysentery.) Resolves toxic heat at BLOOD LEVEL & invigorates blood (charred) Da Huang
Moistens dryness & softens hardness (it's salty). Used for hard, dry stool in the Intestine. A purgative. Mang Xiao
Used in the treatment of severe edema & accumulation of fluids in the abdomen & chest. Because of its toxicity, it can only be used for short period of time in carefully selected patients. (Jing) Da Ji
Most drain damp herbs are sweet & bland or cold and bitter. Describe the function of those properties. Sweet - Tonifies in general & tonifies the Sp. specifically. Bland - Leaches dampness (gently drawing out & down). Associated with Earth, tends to leach damp from Spleen & flesh. Bitter - Draining in nature. Cold - used more for damp heat disorders.
This Drains Damp herb is neutral & is widely used to promote urination. Imp. for strengthening the Spleen & calming the heart. Fu Ling
This Drain Damp herb is used exclusively to promote urination & expel dampness. It has no tonifying effect & is neutral (sl. cool) in temp. Zhu Ling
This herb drains damp heat from the lower burner. It acts particularly on the Kidneys & UB. Is used when there is fluid retention. This herb is sweet, bland & cold so is best used when heat is present. Ze Xie
