7. Integers

opposites The integer on the opposite side of zero from a given number, but at the same distance from zero.
absolute value The distance that an integer is from zero on the number line.
integers The counting numbers, their opposites, and zero.
rational number Any number that can be written as a quotient a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not 0.
coordinate plane A two-dimensional system in which a location is described by its distances from two perpendicular number lines called the x-axis and the y-axis.
x-axis The horizontal line on a coordinate plane.
y-axis The vertical line on a coordinate plane.
quadrants One of the four regions into which the x- and y- axes divide the coordinate plane. THe axes are not parts of the quadrant.
ordered pair A pair of numbers (x, y) used to locate a point on a coordinate plane.
origin The point (0,0) where the x-and y-axes of a coordinate plane intersect.
horizontal A straight line on the coordinate plane where all points on the line have the same y-coordinate.
vertical A straight line on the coordinate plane where all points on the line have the same x-coordinate.
