Chemical Reactions

chemical reaction the process by which one or more substances undergo change to produce one or more differnent substances
chemical formula shorthand notation for a compound or diatomic elment using chemical symbols and numbers
chemical equation the shorthand description of a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and symbols
reactants the substance(s) are the starting materials in a chemical reation, left side of a chemical equation
products the substance(s) formed form a chemical reation, right side of a chemical equation
law of conservation of mass states that mass is neither created nor destroyed
synthesis reaction starts with two or more, ends with one, the creation of a compound
decompostition reaction starts with one, ends with two or more, the breaking down of a compound to form two or more simpler substances
single replacement reaction starts with two, ends with two, one substance on each side is an element
double replacement reaction starts with two, ends with two, all are compounds
exothermic physical or chemical change in which energy is released or removed
endothermic physical or chemical change in which energy is absorbed
law of conservation of energy states that energy is neither created nor destroyed
activation energy the minimum amount of energy needed for a substance to react
catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction
inhibitor slows down or stops a chemical reaction
coefficient number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula, represents how many complete molecules of a substance there is when balancing chemcial equations
clues to chemical reactions solid formed, gas formed, energy relased or absorbed, and color change are some
prefix syllable joined to the beginning of the word, in chemical naming it represents a number
subscript number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol in a chemical formula, relates to how many atoms of that element are in the compound
factors that affect the rate of reactions temperature, concentration, surface area, and catalyst or inhibitor
