Why does ice float in water? The crystal structure of ice means that it is less dense than water.
What states of matter can water be in nature? Solid, liquid, and gas.
Why do water molecules attract each other? Polarity.
Why is water sometimes called the universal solvent? Many, many things dissolve in it.
At what temperature does water freeze? 0ºC (32ºF)
What happens to the dissolved substances in water when it evaporates or freezes? They get left behind.
Which is denser, seawater or freshwater? Seawater.
How many grams of salt per liter are there in seawater? 35 grams of salt per liter.
What is an estuary and what kind of water is formed there? An estuary is where freshwater meets seawater, forming brackish water, or a combination of freshwater and seawater.
How did earth's oceans become salty? Water eroded away minerals.
What is salinity? The mass of dissolved solids in a mass of water.
How does water temperature affect it's density? The colder and saltier water is, the denser it is.
What are the giant, circular surface currents in the oceans called? Gyres.
How many gyres are there? Five.
What elements make water? Hydrogen and Oxygen (H²O).
Which element in water is positively charged and which is negatively charged? The hydrogen is positive, while the oxygen is negative
