Ocean Studying

Properties of water, compositions of oceans, ocean currents

QuestionAnswer
How can ice act as an insulator for fish since its cold? It keeps the water below the ice at least four degrees.
Is water denser as a solid or a liquid? Liquid.
What is polarity? The connection between positive and negative particles.
What happens if two water droplets collide? They will form a bigger droplet.
In what forms of matter can water exist on earth? Solid, Liquid, Gas.
Why does ice float? It floats because water expands and becomes less dense as it freezes.
Why do water molecules connect? They connect with cohesion since they are the same substance.
What happens when you add salt or sugar to water? The salt or sugar dissolves because of adhesion.
What are ocean currents caused by? Wind and the amount of salt in the water.
What is an ocean current? A river of water flowing through the ocean.
Has the amount of salt in the ocean changed? No.
Where is the Gulf stream? The Atlantic ocean.
What are Thermohaline currents? Warm salty ocean currents.
What do data marker buoys travel with? Ocean currents.
Is saltwater or freshwater denser? Saltwater.
Is the flow of currents in the northern and southern hemispheres the same or opposite? Opposite.
What is the average ocean salinity? 35 ppt
What ocean is the saltiest? The Atlantic.
What are four features of the ocean? Continental margins, Abyssal plains, Mid-ocean ridges, and Ocean Trenches.
What are the four criteria scientists use when classifying ocean zones? Sunlight, temperature, salinity, density.
What are the three ocean zones? Surface, Middle, and Deep zones.
As depth increases, salinity...? Decreases.
In polar regions density...? Stays the same.
What oceans contain sea ice? The southern and arctic oceans.
