Oceans EGR

composition/currents/properties

QuestionAnswer
How many gyres are located in the Indian Ocean? 1
How many gyres are located in the Atlantic Ocean? 2
How many gyres are located in the Pacific Ocean? 2
What is a gyre? A gyre is a massive area of moving water that is made up of multiple currents and is steered by the continents.
What is an ocean current? Currents are cohesive streams of seawater that circulate throughout the oceans that can be located on the surface or deep in the water.
What are ocean currents caused by? Ocean currents are caused by winds, gravity and density.
Name the three regions of the continental margins and describe them. The shelf is the shallow part, the slope is the middle while the rise is the base of the slope.
What is an Abyssal plain? An Abyssal plain is the large, flat area of the seafloor that extends across the deepest parts of the ocean basin
What are the Mid-ocean ridges? The Mid-ocean ridges are underwater volcanoes that stretch 65,000 kilometers.
What are Ocean trenches? Ocean trenches are deep canyons that are the deepest parts of the ocean.
What are the four criteria scientists use when classifying ocean zones? Sunlight, temperature, salinity and density.
Name the three ocean zones and describe them. The Surface zone is an area of the shallowest seawater that receives the most sunlight. The Middle zone is an area of medium depth water that receives only a faint blue-green light. The Deep zone is an area of the deepest water that receives no light.
Name the river water near an ocean that has a higher salinity than the river water that is farther from the ocean and describe why it becomes salty. Brackish water is salty river water near an ocean, it becomes more salty than freshwater but not as salty as salt water because the salt water and fresh water mix.
What is Salinity and what unit is it measured in? Salinity is the measure of the mass of dissolved solids in a mass of water that is measured in parts per ton (ppt).
Name five ways in which water is unique from other compounds. 1. Water is found as a solid, liquid and gas. 2. Water has a high specific heat. 3. Water is less dense in its solid form than its liquid. 4. Some types of insects can walk on the surface of water. 5. Some substances can dissolve in water.
What is Polarity? Polarity is a condition in which two ends of a molecule have slightly opposite charges, but the overall charge of the molecule is neutral.
What is Cohesion Cohesion is the attraction among molecules that are alike.
The density of freshwater is lowest at four degrees Celsius. (true/false) false
The density of ice is lower than the density of the same volume of liquid water. (true/false) true
The particles of liquid water are closer together than the particles of the same volume of frozen water. (true/false) true
What is Adhesion? Adhesion is the attraction among molecules that are different.
Water is made up of one oxygen atom and __ hydrogen atom(s)? 2
What is the effect that is caused by the earth's rotation that is one of the factors in creating ocean currents? Coriolis
Which current did the Titanic sink near? The Labrador Current
