Properties of Addition and Multiplication
Property | Example |
---|---|
Commutative Property of Addition | 3 + 2 = 2 + 3 |
Commutative Property of Multiplication | 3 x 2 = 2 x 3 |
Associative Property of Addition | (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 +(3 + 4) |
Associative Property of Multiplication | (2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4) |
Additive Identity Property | When you add zero to a number, the number stays the same. 3 + 0 = 3 |
Additive Inverse Property | When you add a number plus its opposite, it equals zero. 3 + -3 = 0 |
Multiplicative Property of Zero | When you multiply a number by zero, it always equals zero. 5 x 0 = 0 |
Multiplicative Identity Property | When you multiply a number by one, it will always stay the same. 5 x 1 = 5 |
Multiplicative Inverse Property | When you multiply a number by its reciprocal, it equals one. 2 x 1/2 = 1 |
Distributive Property | The number in front of the parenthesis must be multiplied by every number inside. 2(3 +4) = (2 x 3) + (2 x 4) |
