Industrial Relations

Industrial Relations Industrial Relations refers to the relationship between employer/management and employees in an organisation and how they co-operate and communicate with each other.
Importance of Good Employer-Employee Relationships Employees will be happier in their work if industrial relations are good. If the employees are happy with their employer, they are more willing to work hard for the business. Thus, employee motivation and productivity increases.
Importance of Good Employer-Employee Relationships Employees will put in extra effort at their job. They will become intrapreneurs and offer their employer really useful suggestions to help the business
Importance of Good Employer-Employee Relationships Employees are more likely to stay in the job because they are happy there. Thus labour turnover and absenteeism will decrease. This saves the business money recruiting, selecting and training replacement employees.
Importance of Good Employer-Employee Relationships The employer will delegate work to the employees because she trusts them. She will also give them power to make decisions for the good of the business. This means that the employees make a useful contribution to the success of the business.
Causes of industrial conflict Low Pay, Poor working conditions, redundancies and promotions.
Industrial dispute A dispute between employers and employees.
Grievance Procedures Grievance procedures are a means of dispute resolution that can be used by a company to address complaints by employees, suppliers, customers, and/or competitors.
Trade Union A trade union is an interest group that represents employees' views and interests.
Closed Shop A place of work where all employees must belong to an agreed trade union.
Shop Steward A shop steward is a spokesperson elected by employees as their official union representative in the workplace.
Irish Congress Of Trade Unions ICTU is an interest group representing almost all the trade unions in Ireland.
