applaud (verb) | to clap your hands to show approval | After the assembly ended, even though they were bad, I felt obliged to applaud, knowing it was the right thing to do. |
despair (noun) | complete lack of hope | The quarterback felt despair when another pass was missed. |
multitude (noun) | a great number of people or things | In my garden is a multitude of plants. |
outlook (noun) | expectation or belief about the future | I was having trouble keeping a positive outlook on the situation. |
recoil (verb) | to move away suddenly from something unpleasant | Belle looked at the Beast's face and recoiled at the sight. She thought he was hideous at first, but grew to love him. |
stanza | a group of lines in a poem | "Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell; It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell; It pounded on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat, For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat." |
rhyme pattern | the pattern rhyming words in a poem follow | The rhyme pattern in "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" is aabb. |
precede (verb) | to come before | At our school, a game never begins without a cheer to precede it. |
