noun a person place thing or idea ex- Fairhope, table, Lucy
pronoun takes the place of a noun ex- you, me
verb shows an action or helps to make a statement ex- running
adjective modifies nouns and pronouns ex- i have a GREEN pen. to find it say-what kind, how much/many, which one.
adverb modifies adjectives verbs and other adverbs, Tells how, when, where, why, to what extent.
conjunction joins words phrases and clauses. ex- For And Nor But Or Yet So
predicate adjective an adjective that follows linking verbs and describes the subject. ex- nice
subject who or what the entire sentence is about. ex-The DOG with spots likes to bark.
incomplete sentence it doesn't express a complete thought. ex-When I went shopping.
direct object a noun or pronoun that is never in a prepositional phrase. That follows an action verb. ex- I like CHOCOLATE.
indirect object a noun or pronoun that is never in a prepositional phrase, comes before a direct object and after the verb. ex-He gave ME the paper. Who?- me
predicate noun a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames the subject. ex- The boy walked his dog.
antecedent a thing or event that existed before or logically precedes another.
simple sentence one independent clause. ex- She is funny.
compound sentence two or more independent clauses ex- She likes to swim, but she got hurt.
complex sentence one independent clause plus one or more dependent clauses.
declarative sentence makes a statement and ends with a period. ex- I love food.
imperative sentence gives a command and ends with a period. ex- Clean up your room.
interrogative sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark. ex- What are you doing tonight?
exclamatory sentence expresses strong feelings and ends in an exclamation point.
ballad a poem that tells a story similar to a folk tale or legend and often has a repeated refrain.
blank verse poetry that is written in an unrhymed iambic pentameter.
couplet in a poem, a pair of lines that are the same length and usually rhyme and form a complete thought.
epic a long serious poem that tells a story of a heroic figure.
free verse poetry composed of either rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set meter.
haiku a japanese poem composed of 3 unrhymed lines of 5-7-5 syllables. often about nature.
hyperbole a figure of speech in which deliberate exaggeration is used for emphasis.
iambic pentameter a type of meter in poetry when there are 5 iambs to a line.
limerick a light humorous poem of 5 lines with the rhyme scheme of AABB.
lyric a poem such as sonnet that that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. It may resemble a song in form or style.
meter the arrangement of a line of poetry by the number of syllables and the rhythm of accented syllables.
narrative telling a story Ballads and epics are different kinds of narrative poems.
quatrain a stanza or poem of 4 lines.
refrain a phrase, line or group of lines that is repeated throughout a poem, usually after every stanza.
rhyme the occurrence of the same or similar sounds at the end of 2 or more words.
rhythm the beat of a poem made of patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables.
repetition the repeating of sounds, words, phrases, or lines for an effect.
sonnet a lyric poem that is 14 lines long.
stanza 2 or more lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of a poem. they are usually the same length and follow the same rhyme pattern.
stress the emphasis given to particular syllables.
verse a single metrical line of poetry, or poetry in general.
simile a figure of speech comparing 2 things using like or as. ex- Cute as a button.
metaphor comparing 2 things without using like or as. ex- Life is a beach.
personification where non-human subjects are given human qualities. ex- The trees were dancing in the wind.
idiom an expression that has a meaning different from its meaning of its individual words. ex- Sick as a dog.
analogy a point-by-point comparison between 2 things that are alike in some respect. ex- You are as annoying as nails on a chalkboard.
flashback an interruption of the action to present events that took place at an earlier time.
plot all the events that make up the story.
foreshadowing occurs when a writer provides hints that suggest future events in a story.
conflict the struggle between opposing forces in the story.
antagonist a character or force that comes against the main character.
rising action all the events leading up to the climax.
climax the highest point in the story.
theme a message about life or human nature that the writer share with the reader.
point of view how a writer chooses to narrate a story.
