Levee A small ridge or raised area of land used to prevent a body of water from overflowing ( can be man-made)
Storm Drainage System System of drains that prevents flooding during heavy rainstorms
Dam A structure built across a river to control its water flow
Sea Wall Wall built parallel to the shore to slow down erosion
Groin Something that can be built to slow erosion, built at right angles to the beach to trap sand. Causes more erosion on neighboring properties
Beach Nourishment Process in which sand is pumped back onto the beach after erosion has taken place
Jetty A protective structure of stone or concrete that extends from the shore into the sea or ocean water to prevent a beach from washing away
Terracing Make or form ( sloping land) into a number of level flat areas resembling a series of steps
Contour Plowing Plowing fields in curves to reduce the soil erosion
Cover Crop A crop planted between other crops that covers loose soil to prevent erosion
Wind Breaks Planting tall trees or building tall fences to help slow down the wind and prevent soil erosion
Acid Rain Moisture that falls to the earth after being mixed with wastes from burned fossil fuels
Shoreline Area where water meets land
Dredging Deepening or widening of a river or harbor to let boats pass through. This changes the way sediments move through the water and causes beach erosion
Barrier Islands Land formed over many years by the build- up sand and dirt ( deposition just off shore of the main land)
