Civil War Battles
Term | Definition |

Bull Run | This was the first true battle and people came with picnics to see a southern victory. The Confederate victory proved the war would last a long time. |
Chickamauga | The ‘River of Death’ The 2nd bloodiest battle of the War |
Georgia | ‘Sherman’s march to the Sea’ cut a swath of destruction through this state |
Gettysburg | The bloodiest battle of the Civil War which led to Lincoln giving a famous speech there and consecrating the ground as America’s first national cemetery. |
Fort Sumter | This was where the Civil War were began. Caused North Carolina, Virginia, Arkansas and Tennessee to secede. |
Chancellorsville | May 1863 battle which was a confederate victory, but Stonewall Jackson was accidentally killed by his own men |
Antietam | This battle took place when Lee invaded the North for the first time. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation following this battle. |
Appomattox | This was where Lee surrendered to Grant. |
Vicksburg | 6 week siege in which Union forces cut off food and supplies to the city. The fall of this city led to the capture of all of the Mississippi and the splitting of the Confederacy. |
New Orleans | The Union took this southern port as part of the Anaconda plan to split the Confederacy. |
