Earth Sci 2nd Q Test

QuestionAnswer
mass divided by volume density
What are the two types of lava? mafic and felsic
funnel shaped pit at the top of a volcano crater
large basin shaped depression formed when chambers of magma under a volcano empty and the volcano collapses caldera
What is matter? anything that takes up space and has mass
What is volume? The amount of space an object takes up
any activity that results in magma moving toward or onto the surface of the land volcanism
What are physical properties? properties that can be observed without changing the composition of a substence
What are chemical properties? properties that describe how a substance interacts with other substances to produce different types of matter
What are isotopes? atoms of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons
What does the atomic number of an element represent? number of protons in one atom of that element
What is an element? a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances. It has a set of characteristic physical and chemical properties.
What is an atom? the smallest complete unit of an element
What is the smallest complete unit of a compound? molecule
What are the four states of matter? solids, liquids, gases, and plasma
In which phase of matter are molecules touching and jiggling in place? They have a definite shape and definite volume. solids
What do we call a mixture where one substance is uniformly spread out in the other solution
What is mass number? the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom of an element
Which state of matter is not often mentioned? It is found in stars, fire, and lightning. plasma
In which state of matter are the molecules moving freely, not touching but bouncing off each other? There is no definite shape or volume. They expand to take the shape of their container gases
What phrase tells us what elements a compound is made up of and how many atoms of each element are in a molecule of that compound? chemical formula (e)
What are the two major groups of minerals? silicates and nonsilicates
In which phase of matter are the molecules moving around but remaining touching? They have definite volumes and no definite shape. liquids
What are the main characteristics used to differentiate between minerals? color, luster, streak, cleavage and fracture, hardness, crystal shape, and density
What criteria must a substance meet to be considered a mineral? inorganic, occur naturally, solid in crystalline form, and have a definite chemical composition
What is cleavage? the tendency of a mineral to split easily along certain surfaces
Describe mafic lava. dark in color, forms most of ocean crust, low in silica, flows and forms shield cones
Describe felsic lava. lighter in color than mafic, mostly found in continental crust, high in silica, has lots of trapped gases, explodes out of a volcano, forms cinder cones
What is igneous rock? rock from magma and lava that has cooled and hardened
What is intrusive igneous rock? rock that has hardened under the earth's surface and has large crystals due to slow cooling
What are mixtures? two or more substances which are not chemically combined so can be physically separated.
What is the amount of the matter in an object? mass
What is the surface of a mineral sample called? color
What is the light reflected from the surface of a mineral? luster
What is the ability of a mineral to resist scratching? Hardness
What is the process of changing one type of rock to another by means of heat and pressure without melting? Metamorphism
What are the two types of metamorphism? Contact and regional metamorphism.
What are the two types of extrusions? Volcano and volcano neck.
What are the two types of natural resources? Renewable and non-renewable
What is a compound? A pure substance formed when two or more elements are chemically combined..
What makes up a silicon oxygen tetrahedron? Four oxygen atom bonded to one silicon atom.
What is sedimentary rock? Rock formed from sediment that has been compressed and cemented together.
What term refers to the color of a mineral in powdered form? streak
What is fracture? The way a mineral breaks. Some form curved surfaces and others have irregular shapes.
What is any type of rock that has been subjected to heat and pressure without melting? Metamorphic rock
