Earth Science Vocabulary 3

QuestionAnswer
Primary waves Starts at the surface and is the fastest.
secondary waves Starts at the subsurface and is slower .
Surfaces waves Starts on the surface and is the slowest.
Volcano An area of the Earth's surface which magma and volcanic gasses pass
Magma Molten rock under the crust.
Lava Hot molted rock erupted by a volcano.
Magma chamber The body of molten rock that feeds a volcano.
Vents Cracks in the Earth's crust to openings
Pyroclastic flow produced when enormous amounts of hot ash, dust and gases ejected from a volcano.
Viscosity (Viscous) Having a sticky consistency between a solid and a liquid
Caldera A large, semi circular depression that forms when the magma chamber empties out and sinks.
crater funnel-sloped pit near the top of a central vent.
Rock Cycle the series of rock changes from one form to another
Erosion The process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transforms soli and sediments from one location to another
Deposition The process in which material is laid down
igneous rock Rocks formed by cooling of lava and magma.
sedimentary rock Rocks formed through deposition and sediments in layers
metamorphic rock Rocks that were once formed from rocks but has changed by heat and pressure
Intrusive Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the Earth's surface.
Extrusive Rock that forms as a result of volcanic activity at or near the Earth's surface.
Strata Layers of rock (singular stratum)
Stratification The process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers.
Index Minerals used to estimate the temperature depth, and pressure that which a rock undergoes metamorphism.
foliated Mineral grains arranged in planes or bands.
nonfoliated Mineral grains that are not arranged in planes or bands.
