Chapter 3 Rocks

Ch.3 Rocks, Prentice Hall Earth Science

QuestionAnswer
What is a Rock? A Rock is any solid mass of mineral or mineral-like matter that occurs naturally as part of our planet.
What are the three major types of rocks? Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock.
What is the Rock Cycle? The rock cycle is the continuous processes that cause rocks to change.
What is Magma? Magma is molten material that forms deep beneath the Earth's surface.
How does Igneous Rock form? Igneous forms when magma cools and hardens beneath the surface or as the result of a volcanic eruption.
What is Sediments? Sediments are weathered pieces of Earth materials.
How does Sedimentary rock form? Sediments get compacted and cemented to form sedimentary rock.
How does Metamorphic rock form? Under extreme pressure and temperature conditions, sedimentary rock will change into metamorphic rock.
What is Intrusive Igneous Rocks? Intrusive Igneous Rocks are rocks that form when magma hardens beneath Earth's surface.
What is Extrusive Igneous Rocks? Extrusive Igneous Rocks form when lava hardens.
What is Erosion? Erosion is the weathering and removal of rock.
What does Regional Metamorphism result in? Large-scale deformation and high-grade metamorphism.
What results in a Fine-Grained texture? Rapid cooling of magma or lava results in rocks with small, interconnected mineral grains.
What results in a Coarse-Grained Texture? Slow cooling results in the formation of large crystals
What does compaction do? Compaction is a process that squeezes, or compacts, sediments.
What does cementation? Cementation takes place when dissolved minerals are deposited in the tiny spaces among the sediments.
What does Metamorphism mean? Metamorphism means a process that means to change form.
What is clastic sedimentary rocks? Clastic sedimentary rocks are made up of weathered bits of minerals and rocks.
What is chemical sedimentary rocks? Chemical sedimentary rocks form from dissolved minerals precipitate from water solutions.
What are the agents of metamorphism? Heat, Pressure, and hydrothermal solutions.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
