Moon Test Study Guide

QuestionAnswer
The phase of the moon you see depends on? How much of the sunlit side of the moon faces the Earth.

This must happen in order for a solar eclipse to occur? The moon must be directly between Earth and the sun.
During what phase of the moon can a lunar eclipse occur? Full Moon
You are less likely to see a total solar eclipse than a total lunar eclipse because? The moon's umbra only covers a small area on Earth's surface.
What is the shadow that produces a total eclipse called? Umbra
When are tides highest? When the sun, earth, and the moon are nearly in line.
Tide are caused mainly by? Differences in how much sun pulls on different parts of Earth
A Spring tide occurs when? The sun, moon, and Earth line up.
A neap tide occurs when? The sun is at right angles to the line between the Earth and moon.
Eclipse The partial or total blocking of one object in space by another.
Solar Eclipse The blocking of sunlight to earth that occurs when the moon is directly between the earth and the sun.
Lunar Eclipse The blocking of sunlight to the moon that occurs when the earth is directly between the sun and the moon.
Neap Tide The tide with the least difference between low and high tides.
Spring Tide The tide with the greatest low and high tides.
Umbra The darkest part of a shadow.
Penumbra The part of a shadow surrounding the darkest part.
