16-1 Groundwater

QuestionAnswer
Aquifer An aquifer is a body of rock or sediment that can store water.
Pororsity The amount of open space in a set volume of rock
What's very porous? Sandstone
Impermeable Water cannot pass through it
What's impermeable? Clay
Zone of Saturation The layer of an aquifer in which the pore space is completely filled with water
Water Table The upper boundary of the zone of saturation
Zone of Aeration Holds soil moisture and air.
Capillary Fringe Lower boundary of the zone of aeration
What does the depth of the water table depend on? topography, permeability, rainfall, and human use
Recharge Zones Water that flows back into an aquifer
Well A hole that is dug below the level of the water table
How does a Cone of Depression form? Forms where too much groundwater is pumped out from a well
How does an Artesian Well form? Forms when a sloping layer of permeable rock is sandwiched between two layers of impermeable rock.
Hot Spring Groundwater heated by magma.
Geyser Forms when a hot spring periodically erupts from surface pools or vents
