figurative language words used in an imaginative way to express ideas that are literally true
hyperbole figure of speech that the truth is exaggerated "I'm so hungry , I could eat a horse."
personification the giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea "The sun smiled down on us."
simile a comparison between 2 unlike things, using the word "like" or "as"
metaphor a comparison between 2 things that are basically unalike but share some qualities without using the word "like" or "as"
graphic element visual element of a poem such as word position, capital letters, line length and position, stanza length. (Includes poetry)
alliteration the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words "Crusts of black, burned, buttered toast."
meter the regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
assonance the repetition of vowel sounds within non-rhyming words the "i" sound in "is a diamond blind in the black belling of coal"
meter the regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
repetition a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for emphasis or unity; often helps to reinforce meaning and create an appealing rhythm
rhythm a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry
stanza a group of 2 or more lines that form a unit in a poem
rhyme schema a pattern of end rhymes in a poem. It is noted by assigning a letter of the alphabet, beginning with a, to each line. Lines that rhyme are given the same letter.
