The Nervous System
the brain
| Part of Brain | Action |
|---|---|
| Cerebrum | Control muscular movement |
| Cerebellum | Controls body movement and maintains balance |
| Thalamus | Provides crude perception of touch, pressure, pain, and temperature. Includes nuclei involved in movement planning and control. |
| Hypothalamus | Regulates heart rate and arterial blood pressure, body temperature, control of hunger and body weight, sleep and wakefulness, water and electrolyte balance |
| Medulla Oblongata | Contains vital centers that controls breathing, heart-beat and blood supply |
| Pons | Help control breathing with the help of the medulla oblongata |
| Midbrain | Contains the centers for certain visual relexes and the auditory relex centers |
| Pituitary Gland | Requlates the production of hormones |
| Infundibulum | Includes the thalamus, hypothalamus and pineal gland |
| Spinal Plexi (phrenic nerve) | Connects the pituitary gland to the hypothalamus |
| Pineal Gland | Secretes melatonin,sets the body's biological clock |
| Optic Chiasma | Crossing point of the two branches of the optic(II) nerve |
| Olfactory Bulb | Controls sense of smell |
| Oflactory Tract | Forms synapses with neurons of the olfactory (I) nerve |
| Lateral Ventricles | Cavity filled with fluid |
| Transverse fissure | Separates the cerebrum from the cerebellum |
| Longitudinal fissure | |
| 3rd Ventricle | |
| 4th Venricle | |
| Corpus Callosum | Connects cerebral hemispheres, provides communication between the two hemispheres |
