Chem Level 2

Bonding and Structure. Exam 2.4

QuestionAnswer
Avogadro's Number 6.02 x 10^23
Endothermic A reaction where heat energy is absorbed from the surrounding area. ArH is positive
Exothermic A reaction where heat energy is released to it's surrounding area. ArH is negative
Enthalpy Heat energy content
Formula unit The smallest repeating unit of a substance or the empirical formula of an ion or covalent network solid compount
Heat of reaction The amount to hear energy absorbed or released during a particular reaction.
Molar Mass the mass of one mole of substance in grams. mg
Molecule A discreet group of atoms bonded together, which retain the chemical physical properties of that substance
Relative atomic mass*(RAM) The ratio of the average mass of an atom when compared to Carbon-12
Anion A negatively charged ion formed from an atom that has gained one or more elections
Cation A positively charged ion formed from a atom that has lost one or more elections.
Covalent bonds The attraction between the nuclei of the bonding atom and the shared pair of electrons. Covalent bonds form between non-metals elements.
Delocalised electrons Valance elections that are not held to a particular atom but are free to move around within a substance.
Electrolysis The passage of an electric current through a solution
Electroyte A substance that will conduct an electric current.
Electron configuration The arrangement of electrons in the energy levels around the nucleus
Element A substance made up of the same kind of atoms
Ion A charged partial formed form an atom that has lost or gained an electron.
Ionic bonding The electrostatic attraction between a positive cation and a negative anion.
Istope An atom of the same element that has different number of neutrons.
Matallic bonding The electrostatic attraction between the positive metal atom core and the delcoalised electrons. As the electron are not fixed to a particular atom. Matallic bonds are non-directional
Dipole An electric field or uneven distribution of electric density within a bond or over the whole molecule.
Giant covalent solid A substance made up of atoms held together by strong covalent bonds. Usually C, Si, Ge
Hydrogen bonding The stongest type of intermolecular attraction between molecules.
Intermolecular bonding The attraction forces between the molecules. Very strong.
Intramolecular forces Within the molecule, covalent bonding.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
