barometer a weather instrument that measures air pressure
condensation the process of changing from a gas to a liquid
dew point the temperature at which the water vapor in the air condenses (dew forms)
evaporation the process of changing from a liquid to a gas
freezing rain rain that falls as liquid but turns to ice on contact with a freezing object or surface to form a smooth ice
hail precipitation, consisting of large balls of ice, which forms in layers caused when raindrops are forced up and down through colder then warmer air layers found in thunder storms
humidity water vapor in the air
hurricane a severe tropical storm with torrential rain and winds above 74 miles per hour (119 kilometers per hour)
meteorology the science of studying the Earth’s atmosphere and weather
precipitation water that falls to the Earth’s surface as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
psychrometer an instrument used to measure humidity
sleet forms as falling rain from a warm layer of air, then passes through a freezing air layer near the Earth’s surface, forming hard, clear, tiny ice pellets
tornado an extremely destructive, funnel-shaped rotating column of air that passes in a narrow path over land
