Term | Definition |

Polaris | The current star to which the north celestial pole of earth points; also called the North Star |
Latitude | An angular distance to a globe that runs parallel to the equator; measured in degrees north and south |
Longitude | An angular distance on a globe that runs perpendicular to the equator; measured in degrees east and west |
Ellipse | An oval shaped closed curve; the shape of a planets orbit |
Equinox | Either of two times of the year (fall or spring) during a planets orbit when the north and south poles are at am equal distance from the sun, causing day and night to be equal in length |
Summer Solstice | The solstice that mark the onset of summer, at the time of the longest day, about June 21st in the northern hemisphere and December 22nd in the southern hemisphere |
Winter Solstice | The solstice that marks the onset of winter, at the time of the shortest day, about December 22nd in the northern hemisphere and June 21st in the southern hemisphere |
