"Rocks" Vocabulary

rock a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or organic matter
rock cycle the series of processes in which a rock forms, changes from one type to another, is destroyed, and forms again by geological processes
weathering the process by which rock materials are broken down by the action of physical or chemical processes
erosion the process by which wind, water, ice or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another
deposition the process in which material is laid down
magma the hot liquid that forms when rock partially or completely melts
sediment mineral or organic matter deposited by water, ice or wind
igneous rock rock formed when magma (hot, liquid rock) cools and solidifies
sedimentary rock rock formed when grains of sediment are compacted and cemented together
metamorphic rock rock formed from intense heat and pressure squeezing sedimentary rock
composition the chemical makeup of a rock (what minerals it contains)
texture quality of a rock based on size, shape, & positions of the rock's grains
