Term | Definition |
---|---|
Antacids | Side effects: Constipation/Diarrhea. *Increased doses over time may cause pt noncompliance. |
H2 Antagonists | Block gastric acid and pepsin/gastrin secretion. Side effects: drowsiness, constipation. *Bedtime dose very important. |
Proton Pump Inhibitors | Daily maintenance med. Inhibit parietal cell ATP pump. Used for: GERD, erosive esophagitis, h. Pylori. *Capsules can be opened/sprinkled. |
Anti inflammatory Agents | For: Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis. *sulfasalazine contraindicated in patients taking sulfa drugs/aspirin. Can stain pee/contacts yellow. |
Emollient/Saline Laxatives | Draw water into colon |
Stimulant Laxatives | Increase gut activity from mucosal stimulation. |
Bulk Forming Laxatives | Increase fiber, safest option. |
Antiemetics | Inhibit impulse from chemoreceptors to stomach. Side effect: Drowsiness |
Antiflatulents | Reduce surface tension, allowing gas bubbles to combine/release. |
Anti Obesity | Side effect: CNS stimulation. *All controlled substances except Xenical. |
