Cells

cells

TermDefinition
Eubacteria 1 Bacteria constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms. Typically a few micrometres in length, bacteria have a number of shapes, ranging from spheres to rods and spirals.
Cell 2 The smallest functional and structural unit of all living organisms;usually consists of a nucleus, cytoplasm, and a membrane
Cell theory 3 a scientific theory which describes the properties of cells
Resoulution 4 the ability to distinguish between two points on an image
Cell membrane 5 A phospholipid later that covers a cell's surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell's environment
Nucleus 6 In a eukaryotic cell,membrane-bound organelle that cotains the cell's DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction
Prokaryotic 7 an organism whose cell lacks a true nucleus
Organelle 8 One of the small bodies in a cell's cytoplasm that are specialized to preform a specific function
Compound light microscope 9 An instrument that magnifies small objects so that they can be seen easily by using two or more lenses
Magnification 10 the act or process of enlarging the physical appearance or image of something
Convex lens 11 this type of lens is thicker in the center than at the edge
Electron microscope 12 A microscope that focuses a beam of electrons to magnify objects
Archaebacteria 13 common name for a group of one-celled organisms many of which don't need oxygen or sunlight to live
Eukaryotic 14 these cells have a distinct membrane bound nucleus
Organelle 15 one of the small bodies in cell's cytoplasm that are specialized to preform a specific function
Cell membrane 16 A phospholipid later that covers a cell's surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell's environment
Chromatin 17 is the combination or complex of DNA and proteins that make up the contents of the nucleus of a cell
Ribsome 18 a sphere-shaped structure within the cytoplasm of a cell that is made of RNA and protein and is the site of protein synthesis
Chloroplast 19 the combination of plastid (an organelle in an plant cell) and chloros (which means green)
Lysosome 20 a membrane bound cell organelle found in animal cells
Hydrophobic 21 refers to the physical property of a molecule that repels water
Endoplasmic Reticulum 22 a network of tubular membranes in the cytoplasm of the cell
Golgi complex (apparatus, body) 23 a net like structure in the cytoplasm of animal cells
Nuclear membrane 24 the double layered membrane surrounding the nucleus of eukaryotic cell
Chromosomes 25 a structure within a cell that has the genetic material as a threadlike linear strand of DNA bonded to various proteins in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells
Mitochondria 26 known as the powerhouse -these organelles catlike a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell
Cell wall 27 an thin membrane around the cytoplasm of a cell;controls subtances going in and out of a cell
Nucleus 28 In a eukaryotic cell,membrane-bound organelle that cotains the cell's DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction
Cytoplasm 29 the fluid that fills a cell
Golgi body 30 an organelle that takes up and processes secretary and synthetic products from the endoplasmic reticulum
Vacuole 31 a membrane -bound cavity within a cell, often containing watery liquid or secretion
Vesicle 32 a small bubble within a cell
Cytoskeleton 33 helps the cell maintain it's shape, aids in cellular movement
Nucleolus 34 control center of the cell and contains chromosomes
Chlorophyll 35 a green pigment,in all green plants and in cyanobacteria, responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis
Tissues 36 any of the distinct types of material which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products
Organs 37 a part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital function
Organ systems 38 a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions
Organism 39 an individual animal, plant,or single celled life form
Unicellular 40 consisting of a single cell
Multicellular 41 having or consisting of many cells
Structure 42 an arrangement or organization of parts to form an organ, system ,or living thing
Function 43 the reason some object or process occurred in a system that evolved through a process of selection or natural selection
hydrophilic 44 a molecule or functional group that forms strong hydrogen bonds with water

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
